A final speech

Hello, everyone!
Today I'd like to present my persuasive speech on topic "Hardwork is not your enemy, but it is your friend".  Though I've been working hard on it, I think there is always something to be improved in any speech.  I'll be glad to hear your opinion on the speech!

Hard work. What do you feel when hear this word? Does it sound unpleasant or uncomfortable for you?
I believe, many of you, sitting here today, have the same problem – we are afraid of hard work. We don’t like it. Any time we hear the sentence “you have to write a speech, do several tasks and then post them in your blogs till Monday”, we want just throw up our hands helplessly and say to ourselves “Oh…it’s starting again!”
What is our biggest problem? Is it a time pressure and great difficulties? Unbearable demands of work? Or is it something else?
Today I’d like to speak about hardwork, namely, how we see it, how we should see it and what we should do to start working hard.

Hard work is always a stress and pressure. Since school we consider any work as our duty. And if work is a duty, we have to fulfill it in a good way to get noticed and praised.  Jean Piaget, a famous Swiss philologist, believes that any activity is a complicated process of our working brain that includes several important components – first, person is aware what he has to do, secondly, he force himself to perform the task, then, he considers the way how to do it and, finally, picks up the necessary operations for the task. The better result we want, the more effort we should make – and there comes our fears. We are afraid of being mistaken.
Nevertheless, if a person has a plan of action, even a hard work doesn’t seem so difficult and tiring. For example, my uncle and his friend studied in the same university, but one of them reached his life aim whereas my uncle was discouraged in fear of a wasted time and some difficulties.

You should remember, a hard work is not your enemy but it is a key to success. Also, it does not matter who you are and where you come from – everyone is equal before life. If you want to succeed in some scope of action, you should fight your demons – laziness, weariness and resist different temptations. Everything is possible if you are ready to work hard. There are so many examples of people who completely changed their lives only spending more time on work. Even though, our abilities are limited. Some month ago Miles Hilton-Barber was shown on Tv. Watching this man sailing around the world, no one can imagine him to be completely blind. When he was 18, he studied to be a pilot but he started losing his sight and lost it at the age of 20. However, he didn’t give up on his dream and through a hard work became a traveller.

So, what should we do to push ourselves and start working? Our biggest problem is that we see it as a hard work. But we have to find it helpful and pleasant. We should find it motivational, too. For instance, if you face with a heavy project, imagine that it is only a piece of a puzzle that will help you in the future career. Then, make your work more enjoyable. Sometimes it’s better to carry on some things together – do the boring task with your friends.  And, all and all, just do the first step!
Finally, though the phrase “hard work” has the word “hard”, it doesn’t mean something impossible. The only thing we should be aware is that everything is possible. Just be loyal to your dreams and hold your course. If you work hard, you’ll achieve success!

Challenge 5

The next challenge that I have to do to push me out of my comfort zone is to ask for a change in the nearest shop.

Well, it was not as difficult as I expected. Without any embracement, I came to the corner shop. There was a minute of hesitation, though. However, a few moments later I was in line waiting for my turn to come. I smiled shyly looking at the face of the shopkeeper and asked her if she could change a 1000-ruble bill. She answered that unfortunately there was a problem with money today and it was impossible to make change. Then, I thanked her and left the shop. This action turned out to be quite natural and, as I noticed, asking for help was not as problematic as it was in the beginning of my experiment.
Now I see - carrying out these tasks is very helpful. I cannot but get impressed by the result every time. Some years ago, I couldn’t imagine that I would do anything like that, but now it seems easy!
Nevertheless, there is still a lot of work to do to make myself braver…😁

Writing a Speech: Editing and Proofreading

Hello, dear readers!

When the text of your speech is written, the next step is correction. My task is to edit Denis’s draft. The parts that were changed are highlight in red.

Are you healthy? How often do you exercise? Government guidelines recommend that everyone has to do 30 minutes of exercise 3-5 times per week to be in shape and ill less. What do you think now – do you exercise enough?
We live in the world of rapidly evolving technologies. Though the speed of our lives has become faster, we spend less time outdoors and lead a sedentary lifestyle. This leads to my thesis that is exercise will make you more organized and healthy both physically and mentally.
First, exercise really helps you get organized. When you are a lazy person, it is difficult to take the first step. However, all a matter of committing yourself to something will provide you with a lot of positive feedback. Once you start doing exercise and observing positive results, you actually enjoy it. It takes a lot of effort and strong will, but it's worth it. The principal thing to do is to participate in an activity you like. If you start organizing your day, you will no longer be a stressed-out person. You’ll have enough time to carry on with all your activities.
Second, it is obvious that once you exercise you will be in a better condition. You will be healthier in a physical way. Your muscles will get stronger and stronger. Probably, you will lose weight, too. Your body will be in good condition, full of energy and it will respond immediately to any action and any activity that you want to do.
Third, exercising affects you positively in a mental and psychological way. Doing exercise helps you set specific goals which can be achieved. You become aware of your abilities, accept your weaknesses, and your self-esteem goes up. Any sport helps you not to think about school, friends, problems, among other things. It brings you time to think about yourself and no one else. It helps you keep your mind busy and to avoid dangerous habits like drugs.
All and all, doing exercise is very important to any person of any age. So, never stop working out – spend more time in the gym! Because when you move, you move only forward. When exercise, you start living your life happily.

Speech Structure: Polishing the Conclusion

The rules of a conclusion are:
  1. Effective summary of the major points of the speech.
  2. Inspiring solution or action step.
  • Decorate these two with your final appeal that challenges, inspires, or motivates your audience to consider the significance of your topic.
  • Make sure your tone corresponds with the entire speech.
  • It is also a good idea to get back to the introduction and make so called “full circle”. That always gives unity to the speech.

I'm to write a conclusion to the speech "How to Communicate Effectively"

In conclusion, communication is essential because it brings changes in our lives: with both speaking and listening, we change the world. That is why be aware you are a good listener – and, at the same time, do not hesitate to speak if you are afraid of being misunderstood and be unheard. Only then, you’ll find the real self and understand the world around you.

Speech Structure: Building the Body

The task is to write the outline for one of the performances. I’ve chosen the 1st speech that is by Grift_the_power_of_passion_and_perseverance  by Angela Lee Duckworth.

Purpose Statement: The purpose of this speech is to inform the audience of the positive effect of grit

2.  Your life depends not only on your ability to learn quickly and easily
3. Motivation and psychological perspectives matter in education

b) Grit is living life like it’s a marathon, not a sprint
C. Grit Questionnaires in school

2. How little science knows about building the grit
A. talent doesn’t play an important role in making student grittier

3. Growth mindset as a way of building the grit

Conclusion
We need our to be gritty about our kids getting grittier

The creative method of thinking and the ideas for the speech

Hello, dear readers!

To come up with the ideas for the persuasive speech, I’ve chosen the method of random words to help me. I’ve found ten words in the dictionary and five words gave me some ideas.
Firstly, “stress” is a common thing when you want to succeed in something and you have to work very hard. Maybe, it will be a good idea to describe the ways of coping with pressure. Also, as my topic is connected with determination, it’d be interesting to compare the results of those who managed to straddle over some difficulties with those who couldn’t resist the stress and gave up.
Secondly, I united two words that are “enemy” and “erase” because only by killing your “enemies” (laziness, fears, lack of confidence, etc.) you’ll get the result. Then, some techniques how to push oneself and start working should be mentioned in the speech.
Third, because of hard work we expand our skills and learn different information, change our inner worlds and broaden our minds (grow as a person) and it can be shown through the personal example.

Writing an introduction

My task is to write an introduction for my persuasive speech using one of the main attention-getters. The topic of the speech is "Hardwork is not an enemy, but it's your friend".

Hardwork. What do you feel when hear this word? Does it sound unpleasant or uncomfortable for you?
I believe, many of you, sitting here today, have the same problem – we are afraid of hard work. We don’t like it. Any time we hear the sentence “you have to write a speech, do several tasks and then post them in your blogs till Monday”, we want just throw up our hands helplessly and say to ourselves “Oh…it’s starting again”.
What is our biggest problem? Is it a time pressure and great difficulties? Unbearable demands of work? Or is it something else?

Today I’d like to speak about hardwork, namely, how we see it, how we should see it and what we should do to start working hard.

Researching (steps)

I'm to write a research plan to make my future speech more convincing. Here are 5 main steps I've chosen:

1.  Study the newspapers and watch news programs daily to get useful information.
2.  Visit library in search of some articles and books of famous people who gain their popularity through hardwork. Read books about success and ways of making yourself work.
3.  Have a talk with parents and ask them whether their friends/ former fellow students succeed in life by working hard.
4.  Ask the history teacher about a famous historic person.
5.  Watch several biographical films about the life&work of famous businessmen/politicians/scientists

I hope, all of this will be helpful resources. My favourite step is to ask parents about their friends because it's closer to life and then it proves that everyone can archive their life goals.

Challenge 4

I’m president of the united states and I’m not going to eat any more broccoli!
-George H W Bush

To overcome stage fright, I have to do the 4th challenge that is to sing in front of someone indoors.
First off, I should mention I can’t sing. I sing very badly and then I’m afraid of performing in front of the audience. So, I wasn’t quite sure to the last whether it should have been performed or not because it’s quite specific.
Well, my friend and I went to the recreation park that is not far from our place. As different public events are held on holidays, there’s a stage there. I felt quite uncomfortable when I was going upstairs on the stage as if I had to give a live concert performance all the night long, but the audience wasn’t so huge to call it a concert, only three or five people passing by. Then, I pressed the button “play” and the melody started playing. I felt short of breath and my face got red. People were staring at me, and that moment I felt really uncomfortable, but I ignored my feelings and started sinning.
When the song was to be sung at last, and I still was unwell – my legs were wobbling with a silly smile on my face. It was terrifying just to stand alone in front of some strangers and sing ( a great mixture of embracement and adrenaline). But in the end I was happy that everything ended.
Though it’s a great experience, I’m sorry but I’m not going to experience it once again!

Speech Structure: Mastering the Introduction

Good evening! I'm glad to see you there again!

Today we’re studying how to make the introduction more effective. My task is to watch five public speakers perform and understand what attention-getters are used in each speech and then evaluate the transition between the attention-getter and the thesis.
I.  Attention-getters:
Speech 1: Asking a question (How are we, “homo sapience” doing as a species?)
Speech 2: Acting as an illustration of the speech (= Life will sometimes feel like a fight) + questions (Can you think of a time when life tried to knock you down?)
Speech 3: Telling a story + the quotation (George Washington Cavers says all learning is understanding relationships)

Speech 4 Questions (How do you explain when things don’t go as we assume? How do you explain when other are able to achieve things that seem to defy all of the assumptions?)

Speech 5: Making a reference (I feel there is uncomfortable tension in the room…I shouldn’t have worn this dress) + asking the question (So, why did I do that?)

II. The thesis statements and evaluation of the transition:

1.  “Outbreaks of nature don’t end well”. I’d give 2 pts for the transition. I liked the transition between the 1st question to the statement because it was logic and laconic but at the same time the introduction seems quite long and “heavy”. I think the reason of this is that the speaker used too much scientific terms.
2.  “Our most challenging opponent is ourselves”. I’d give 3 pts to this speaker. The attention-getter was impressive because you can’t get tired of somebody who performs on stage.  The transition was simple but relevant – the speaker asked the question and the answered it with the statement thesis.
3.  I liked the way the speaker used the quotation and made it a statement thesis(George Washington Cavers says all learning is understanding relationships). The transition is not evident but it’s a laconic one – I believe, it’s the strongest introduction from all the speeches. Without a doubt, the speaker scores 3 pts.
4.  Asking a number of questions is always a winner as you involve the listeners in your speech and make them think, too. The transition is done well, in the logic of the speech. Then, I’d give him 3 pts.
5.   "Image is powerful but also, image is superficial". Personally, I don’t like the transition of the last speech. I’m afraid, the actions (and some sentences, too) were distractive and confusing, and some of them were not to the point. Because of this, is seems that the statement thesis I separated from the whole text. I’d give 1 pt.

Thank you for your attention!
